Oh my greatness! A blog post!

On the long absence.

I’ve been neglecting my blog something terrible as of late, well for the majority of the past year.
Reason being that I’ve been working myself to the bone and have been taking most of my off time to rest and replenish my batteries.
Well, where to start…

Getting the most out of your aquarium, the hard way.

With the excitement of getting a new tank, sometimes getting the most out of your aquarium flies out of the window.  You start off with the grandest plans and the greatest intentions and as Murphy’s Law dictates, the crap will hit the fan as soon as everything starts looking good.

One more tank please!

As from Saturday the 7th of November, my life is complete.  Why is that?  Well I finally got the perfect aquarium for my perfect aquarium stand.  Earlier this year in March I went through to my favourite LPS  to pick up a few things for a few clients.  While waiting for my friend to finish up what she was doing, I came across a particular aquarium.  This aquarium was 122cm x 45cm x 65cm and it had me.

New beginnings (again).

The time had come to say; “Screw it, I want it completely different!”, “Again!”

You may have noticed by now that I completely change my aquarium every 6 – 8 months.  I do this as I have a short attention span and beacause I grow and condition thes fish so that I can breed them at the fish farm.  I am also very aware that most of the species that I keep do eventually grow too large for a 1200mm by 35omm by 425mm aquarium and that when they reach a specific size, they have outgrown it.

Before I start to dismantle the aquarium in its then pre-change state, preparations need to be made.  First, I set up a quarantine container.  To set up a quick, easy and less risky quarantine container, I used a polystyrene box often used to transport fish to and from the fish farm and/or clients.  As it is a sterile, insulated, watertight container with the usual four sides and a lid, it is an integral part of your fishkeeping arsenal  if you are essentially limited by space and cannot set-up a permanent quarantine aquarium.  (more…)

A mucky situation

Of course, if you live in one of the most affluent suburbs in the city, your pond must should surely look like one of the finest fountains of Rome.  Unfortunately, this was definitely a pipe-dream at this household, this was the filthiest pond I have ever worked with!  The pond is part of an art-deco fountain with a cherub motif and was practically a sludge box that happened to have fish in it!

The big deal

I haven’t blogged for quite some time and couldn’t think of a better time to write again. My aquarium at home is thriving and in the space of a single month I acquired three new clients. This is a big deal for me as this is the first time this has happened.

The kitsch aquarium, its about time!

I’m all for natural aquariums with smoothe rocks, driftwood and sand.  But there comes a time when nature takes a back seat to fluoro gravel, a bubble-powered Tyrannosaur skull and artificial wood. (more…)

The great wait, part one.

My aquarium at home has had an important role in my life ever since I first got it.  I’ve had this aquarium for 8 years now, it is a standard 4 foot aquarium (122cm x 35cm x 35cm) with a built-in filter on the left-hand side.  Every set-up that I’ve had in this aquarium, had brought me a lot of happiness, as well as a lot of frustration.
